Mourning Cloak

Looking a little worn around the edges, but this fellow wasn’t nearly as tattered as one I had seen the previous day.

Apparently this butterfly species is one of the most long-lived in North America — they can live up to 10 months.  Not only that, but they can over-winter. They go into a hibernation and warm days can bring them out, even in the winter.  How’s that for some trivia?
