White lions are white due to a recessive gene — these are not albinos. In the region in which they originated, white turns out to have been a better choice for camouflage. There are 3 of these lions in the zoo right now — a male and two females.
I had been talking to a zoo person about what they do to keep the animals from going batty behind bars and he mentioned “enrichment.” And apparently some hapless peacocks and Canada Geese inadvertently volunteer themselves as enrichment from time to time. Here, the lion got very interested by something in the next enclosure: a person! She went as far as she could then just sat and watched him do his cleanup chores, staring at him in such a way that he felt it and would look up from his tasks from time to time to see what she was doing. She only wandered off when he had finished and left.
The other female watched from more of a distance.
