They’re back!

The Semipalmated Sandpipers started showing up last week, travelling with Semipalmated Plovers, and numbers are beginning to increase. A reminder for those who don’t pay attention to these things: these remarkable little things summer up in the tundra, then migrate down to South America.  They stop along Fundy mudflats to double their weight, then will fly straight through to their destination. On some beaches, they will number in the hundreds of thousands and its amazing to see them fly together.  It’s like watching sentient smoke moving over the beach.  In a couple of weeks, numbers should peak, and it’s been a long time since we’ve gone to see them, so maybe it’s something to put on the to-do list for this summer.
