On the road

Usually I’m the one chomping at the bit to head east; this summer it was the fellow. He’s been spritely all week, he went to bed early and lept out of bed at 3:15am. Me, I was 3 hours behind him to bed and I grudgingly trailed him out of bed at 3:30, long enough for him to have coffee and a bagel ready for me. A little over an hour later, we were on the road. The sky was already beginning to lighten, no one on the road except for some taxis. When we hit the 401, it was mostly transport trucks.

I had thought of blogging using my iPad, so set it charging before I went to bed so that it would have a full charge. However, when I turned it on, nothing. Nada. Dead. I’ve plugged it in, but charging a dead iPad in a car … USB chargers work well with iPhones and on my iPad 1, but the higher energy demands of my iPad 3 were never met with much success. Well, a trickle charge can slow down depletion, as for actually charging? Can’t hurt to try, but based on past experience, I ain’t optimistic. So that means my WordPress app is unavailable. That leaves me with Safari on iPhone as I don’t have the app on my phone. And that leaves me trying to figure out his to upload images. And that will have to wait until. my brain is more awake.

As for any typos that are likely going to be rampant in this post? I will remain unapologetic: I am in a moving car, I get carsick, autocorrect is doing bizarre things and merely using WordPress on mobile Safari is causing typing issues.

Speaking of carsick, time for a break, after which I’ll see if I can figure out a solution for the images. So far, we are under cloud, but there are going to be some pretty parts along the long drive ahead.

Recollecting last summer, which saw construction zones throughout Ontario and Quebec, the fellow idly asked, “I wonder where we’ll run into construction this year?”

Perfectly timed, we were kicked off the 401 — detour!!! We trailed a succession of trucks through beautiful farmland on a narrow country road in an 80, then 60 zone. It was long enough to make the fellow antsy, but wasn’t bad. It was well marked and pointed us back to the hwy and we didn’t loose much time.

Now outside Montreal, we hit another construction zone, but so far, nothing like the mess last year. Of course, we’re not through the city yet, so fingers crossed!

The morning clouds gave way to beautiful blue sky and morning light. We’ve just driven back into the clouds, so it’s possible we’ll hit the forecasted rain after all.

Holy Hannah, the hoops I just had to jump through! But, just breezed through Montreal and was able to upload proof of presence. 🙂

Just drove into rain, but hopefully I’ll be able to upload some prettier pictures later.

The entrance to the tunnel under the St. Lawrence River. Every year it gets a bit scarier, with more and more tiles falling off. This year, they seemed to have dealt with it — by removing the tiles. Looks better, but makes me wonder about integrity of tunnel that caused the tiles to fall off…

This is one of those landmarks that lets you know where you are without need of signs. Coming back, when we see thus bump, we know we’ve almost reached Montreal.

Currently, we are driving through some dense fog and rain. Hazard lights are on for added visibility and we’ve slowed down a lot. This could be one of our most “adventurous” drives east since a family emergency had us on winter roads facing whiteouts. Continuing with caution is safer than pulling over on the side of the road with reduced visibility and other drivers overdriving the conditions and lots of big trucks on the road.

Closing in on New Brunswick.
